Compare Canon EOS 60D vs Canon EOS 50D.
Main differences

Canon 60D

Comparing the 50D and 60D cameras, it becomes clear that the new camera is not just an upgrade, but a modified model. The most obvious difference is that it is smaller and has a composite body on an aluminum chassis. The 60D is smaller than the 50D, but the ergonomics haven't changed much - it will still feel like a significant improvement over the previous camera. A positive change is signaled by a small IR receiver window on the handle - the 60D is compatible with Canon RC-5 and RC-6 IR Remote Controls.

  • Higher resolution sensor (17,9 MP vs 15,1 MP)
  • Supports SD, not CF cards
  • No flash sync jack
  • Wireless flash control
  • IR remote trigger support
  • High Definition LCD, Swivel, 3: 2 aspect ratio
  • Plastic case (8% weight saving)
  • Standard range ISO up to 6400, not up to 3200, range extension ISO to 12800
  • Added orientation sensor
  • User definable upper limit Auto ISO
  • Video recording up to 1080, screen instead of viewfinder, manual control of depth of field and exposure during video shooting
  • New Features: In-Camera Conversion, Environment Settings, Creative Filters, Advanced JPEG Options
  • No joystick, simplified top and information panel, no automatic AF lens adjustment
  • Redesigned control principle, with fewer buttons
  • Reduced burst speed
  • There is a visual horizon level
  • Built-in matrix cleaning system

Canon EOS 60D. In work

For work in various shooting conditions, despite the fact that the device is outdated morally, it is still suitable. Avoiding low-light scenes, don't bully ISO above 1600, and we will see a high-quality result during processing.

Canon 60D

Matrix, ISO, noises

APS-C matrix, made by CMOS technology. 19 megapixel sensor, 18 million pixels involved. Matrix allows operation in ranges from 100 to 6400 ISO, with the advanced mode available in the camera settings (ISO 12800).

Canon 60D with APS-C sensor has a crop factor of 1.6, EGF lens 50mm on this camera will be 80mm.

Upper limit of standard value ISO although it has an equivalent ISO 6400, however, the camera makes a lot of noise at this value. ISO 6400 and extended (H) is suitable for scenes in which detail and color are not important. The Canon 60D's sensor is designed to last the life of the camera.

Camera modes

In addition to the standard green zone modes (sports, portrait, landscape, macro), the Canon 60D SLR mode selector can be used to set manual and semi-automatic automatic exposure (AE) modes:

  • Shutter Priority (Time Value)
  • Aperture Value

In semi-automatic modes, the Canon EOS 60D SLR camera executes the specified program, based on one of the entered values. In semi-automatic and manual modes, all camera settings related to photography functions are available for change. In general, the modes for a beginner are quite diverse. Again, in addition to the standard (well, they are found in all 60D level DSLRs, one way or another) modes, there are Night Scene, No Flash Mode and an interesting, in my opinion, CA (Creative Auto) mode. It is automatic, but it can be corrected. Choose Burst, Background Blur, Picture Style, Flash On. The camera does the rest by itself.

Canon 60D

Management

Compared to the XXXD line, the XXD line is awarded with an expanded set of tools that make it faster and easier to work with the camera, providing quick access to certain functions. In the Canon 60d SLR camera, these functions are

  • Range ISO
  • Metering mode
  • Focus mode selection
  • Focus point selection
  • Exposure lock
  • Introduction of exposure compensation
  • Depth of field preview
  • Switching the operating speed shutter (burst / single-frame shooting)
  • and other

An additional selector on the rear panel can have several control modes. The SET button is reassignable, the exposure lock and focus point buttons in the upper right corner of the body are also. The camera body has a depth-of-field preview button (DOFV). The "print" button combined with the UNLOCK button allows you to connect to Canon printers using the PictBridge protocol and print photos directly from the camera. This function can be used, for example, to print photos directly at an event.

Canon 60D

In general, it is convenient to operate the camera. I did not feel any discomfort in the absence of the joystick available on the Canon 50D, Canon 5D and 5D mark II. Everything is clear and well thought out.

Display

The Canon 60D is Canon's first camera with a XNUMX-inch HD flip-up display. The default display shows the parameters of the selected operating mode; through the display, you can change the camera settings.

canon 60d menu settings liveviewer.com 1

The display shows the following parameters by default:

  • Work mode
  • Current speed shutter
  • Light sensitivity
  • Exposure compensation readings
  • Mode shutter
  • Access to the virtual horizon
  • Installed custom style
  • White balance settings
  • Automatic brightness correction
  • Menu access to remap buttons
  • Autofocus mode
  • Focus point
  • Metering mode
  • Saved Image Format
  • Battery charge
  • Remaining number of frames

The Q button accesses the settings on this screen. Navigation with the multi-position switch above the additional control dial, changing the parameters - both manually, through the "SET" button, and by the dial under the multi-position switch.

Canon 60D

Canon 60D Menu

Many functions are available through the menu. The menu is traditional Canon style, straightforward, not complicated. Depending on the selected mode, the corresponding information is displayed on the rotary display (in the Canon 600D, the color of this menu could be changed). In video mode, the photo setting tabs are replaced with the setting tabs for video mode. Custom functions are available through the menu, which allow you to reassign certain control buttons, set the step for changing parameters, and much more. "My Menu" allows you to bring frequently used functions to the general list.

In the "green zone" modes, not all functions remain available through the menu.

Canon 60D Operational Control Display

An additional display serves to increase the efficiency of work. As conceived by the manufacturer, the screen is used together with the buttons next to it. You can see the current camera settings on the Operation Control Display without going into LiveView mode or without turning on the main LCD monitor.

canon 60d liveviewer.com 3

Information that is located on the operating control display:

  • Work mode
  • Current speed shutter
  • Light sensitivity
  • Exposure compensation readings
  • Mode shutter
  • White balance settings
  • Autofocus mode
  • Metering mode
  • Saved Image Format
  • Battery charge
  • Remaining number of frames

One of the buttons turns on the display backlight. This screen contributes to efficiency in work, and I can't even imagine how quickly in reportage shooting you can change the parameters without it.

Optical path

Viewfinder

The viewfinder is bright, with the transition from the XXXXD (XXXD) series, the increased picture coverage is striking. Viewfinder shows speed shutter, battery charge, exposure meter reading, sensitivity, current aperture value, focus points, spot metering area circle and buffer location. Due to the eyecup, the diopter adjustment wheel protrudes outward, which constantly strays from the set values - when putting the device in a bag, for example.

The Canon 60D DSLR camera provides the ability to replace the matte focusing screen with a screen with a micro-raster and wedges for precise focus adjustment. This feature will be useful for owners of a fleet of old optics.

Viewfinder screen in Canon 60D

In LiveView mode, you can select focusing modes: slower but more accurate using a matrix, or using a phase difference sensor. The latter, although faster, is slightly less accurate. Its use is also inconvenient because the image disappears from sight for a moment, since the phase sensor requires a lowered mirror.

Unfortunately, in Live View mode, it is not directly activated, since the mirror is raised. But also with the matrix, Canon 60D exposure metering produces well. In LiveView mode, you can change parameters by pressing the Q button. Parameters and current settings are spaced around the edges of the display. The selection of the focus area in the live image mode is available using the buttons on the navigation bar. In the same area is produced exposure metering.

canon 60d menu settings liveviewer.com 13

White balance sensors

I don’t know how the white balance sensors are implemented, but in difficult working conditions, the balance is simply awful. Better to use the lock the white balance function, otherwise you can get a jumble of colors. In ordinary scenes, the camera, although lying, is not fatal.

Metering system

Exposure metering is controlled by a 63-zone dual-layer sensor. The sensor takes the same image that the photographer sees through the eyepiece of the viewfinder. Exposure compensation up to 5EV is available.

Auto focus

Focus points

The AF sensor has 9 points, with a cross-shaped (up to f / 2.8) in the center. The choice of the focus point can be entrusted to the camera, or can be assigned manually.

Focus point selection modes

Manual, automatic. I used the center focus point. This application is suitable for many scenes, except for those modes where it is necessary exposure metering at the focus point.

Canon 60D autofocus modes

Fast, through the viewfinder:

  • One-Shot AF - one-shot autofocus mode.
  • AI-Focus is an autofocus mode in which the camera tracks the movement of the focusing object. As soon as the subject begins to move, the camera switches to tracking mode.
  • AI-Servo AF - a mode of tracking and predicting the movement of an object. All focus points are active in this mode.

Slow focus mode - across screen in LiveView.

Shutter

Shutter with metal shutters, horizontal travel, exposure range from 1 \ 8000 (maximum) to 30 seconds. With an external intervalometer, it is possible to set the shutter speed of any length. The Canon 60D's photo shooting speed allows you to shoot at 5 frames per second and create an endless burst of JPEG frames. The RAW buffer only fits 16. The camera has several silent shutter settings. shutter... For viewfinder shooting, the usual slowdown in shooting speed. Single mode for Live View gate works just quieter, in another - gate operates separately from the mirror lift mechanism. The second, albeit very slow shooting mode allows for almost silent operation. Sound of work shutter pleasant, and does not hurt the ear (as happens with cameras of younger models).

Guaranteed mileage shutter Canon 60D - 100k frames.

Housing, tightness

Despite the fact that the body of the Canon 60D camera is composite, it does not creak or walk in the hands. The reduced number of control buttons on the body, however, did not affect the usability. The main controls have remained in their original places. The mode dial is located to the left of the built-in flash and has a stopper to prevent unintentional mode switching. Despite the reduced (canon 50D is larger) dimensions, the device sits perfectly in the hand. The weight of the camera allows long-term operation on the "weight" without any support. Hands don't get tired even without a belt. As a standard support, the kit comes with a sewn double-sided belt with a leather backing. Canon 60D sealed to allow shooting in light weather. The apparatus will not tolerate immersion in water.

canon 60d liveviewer.com 11

Разъемы

On the side panel under one cover are hidden HDMI, micro-USB, microphone jack and wired remote control. Remotes are supported both simple and with a timer and radio control (RC-5, RC-6).

Flash, flash control

The built-in flash is an indispensable thing, especially when you need it desperately, and there is no room in your bag for an external flash. The camera supports the ability to remotely control flash using the built-in flash.

canon 60d liveviewer.com 2

At the same time, the controlled flash must be set to the control mode, the head must be directed towards the object being shot, and the body must be turned towards the camera. The built-in photo flash rises automatically, with manual control - by pressing a button on the body.

canon 60d liveviewer.com 10

Flash level compensation is available in the camera settings menu. There is no external sync contact. The flash helps focusing in the dark, the camera itself illuminates the focusing object before shooting.

canon 60d flash helper focusing

Battery and charger

Canon Battery 60D is compatible with many other Canon cameras. Battery type LP-E6 is used in Canon 6D, Canon 5D mark II, Canon 70D and others. When switching from a Canon 60D DSLR camera to a higher class DSLR, there should be no problems with battery compatibility. The battery lasts for 1100 shots. To increase the operating time, you can purchase a battery grip for 2 batteries or AA batteries.

canon 60d liveviewer.com 5

Videography

The camera can record video in HD1080P (1920 × 1080), but for this it is better to purchase an SDHC or XC memory card, since during shooting on ordinary cards, recording is interrupted due to buffer overflow. By the way, in the 60D, Canonists abandoned CF memory cards and used SD. In normal shooting mode, video recording with audio is limited to 30 minutes, and is 4GB in file size. Video recording mode provides manual exposure control and electronic depth-of-field control.

Canon 60D takes photos in video mode. However, it is normal to shoot without interrupting video recording in maximum quality, it is possible only in JPEG, in small bursts, otherwise - a buffer overflow leads to the stop of video recording.

Card write speed

The write speed of the buffer full of RAW is about 60 seconds. At the same time, the camera marks the vacated space in the buffer on the display and duplicates it in the viewfinder. As soon as space becomes available for a new frame, the camera reports this and allows the release shutter... JPEG can be recorded continuously.

For those looking to shoot RAW video with the Canon 60D and Magic Lantern, there is a limitation - the bus for writing to memory cards has a ceiling of 20 megabytes / second. The maximum RAW video recording time is 6-12 seconds, the maximum resolution is 1728 pixels on the wide side. There are no solutions, since these are the hardware characteristics of the hardware.

Data protection

Image protection is implemented by printing in EXIF, photographer data (entered in the camera menu). By default, the camera stitches its serial number into RAW.

Working with old lenses

Canon 60D allows work with older lenses. Without dancing with a tambourine, old lenses with M42 thread can be installed on the camera, through adapter M42-EF... It will be relatively comfortable to work with old lenses only in the aperture priority mode. In other modes, it is necessary to rely on the readings of the camera's exposure meter in order to correctly set the settings for the photo.

canon 60d liveviewer.com 26

The Canon 60D benefits

  • Allows you to shoot in bad weather.
  • Writes JPG to card quickly enough.
  • Buffer for JPEG - although officially declared at 58 frames, it still turns out to be infinite, since it is written onto the card during shooting. I have never filled the buffer with JPEG files. Even after 2 minutes of continuous shooting.
  • The camera's 18 effective megapixels allow for enormous prints.
  • Built-in flash saves equipment weight.
  • The mode dial is locked, which means that the mode will not switch randomly.
  • A swivel display that really makes it easy to shoot from the waist up or off the ground. No rugs are needed, the clothes will remain clean.
  • Full-hd 1080p video recording is a good start for a beginner videographer.
  • RAW video support with Magic Lantern... The camera codec has a high compression ratio. You can get real video quality from the camera sensor using the functionality of additional unofficial software.
  • Taking photos in video mode. RAW, JPEG

Disadvantages

  • Noisy matrix cannot boast of high detail on ISO from 3200 and up
  • Small buffer for RAW
  • Long writing of RAW buffer to card. The memory card write bus has a ceiling of 20 megabytes / second. 15 raves of 20-30MB will be recorded for about 50 seconds.
  • Video is limited to 4GB and 30 minutes of recording
  • Shooting RAW photos in maximum video quality is essentially impossible. To record RAW to the card, the camera interrupts video recording.

Canon 60D alternatives

Canon 70D

Less noisy matrix, swivel screen with touch screen, bayonet EF-s, Enhanced Focus Speed, Expansion ISO to 25600

Canon 50D

The noisier matrix, the higher the shooting speed. Technically advanced (AF adjustment for lenses) and more weatherproof. Controls similar to Canon 5D mark II.

Canon 7D

top on 2013 year, due to more autofocus points, improved white balance, faster rate of fire and ease of control "like on Canon professional cameras"

Alternative firmware

Canon EOS 60D is officially supported by unofficial Magic Lantern firmware, which expands the functionality of Canon cameras. If you are an advanced user, you have probably heard about this program. If not, then I recommend reading about it in my Magic Lantern article.

Canon 60D. Sample photos

The photos were taken in different conditions and with different optics, mainly with the Sigma 17-50 f / 2.8. With a good standard lens, the device works, if not miracles, then at least, it gives a decent result.

Summary

For everyday use, the Canon 60D and its features are abundant. However, to expand the functionality in addition to the firmware, you can install the Magic Lantern program. Magic Lantern, for example, can be used to view the mileage shutter camera, for shooting time lapses without using external remote controls with a timer. A year and a half after the release of this unit, Canon released the Canon 60Da version for astrophotography. In the secondary market, you can find it with low mileage at a very reasonable price.

I hope this Canon 60D review has helped you get to know this camera better. Do you have any experience with the Canon 60D? Share it with us in the comments!

  1. I changed 550d to 60d and I don't regret it at all. With the first, there were problems due to the low protection against dust and moisture. I even had to take it for repairs. But with 60d it's a fairy tale, I can shoot in any weather and not be afraid.

  2. For me, the most significant plus is that it allows you to shoot in bad weather, since we usually travel in the off-season and we are often accompanied by fog, interspersed with rain.

  3. I dreamed of a camera for a long time and they gave it to me for the new year, happiness knew no bounds. I figured out the settings quickly, now he is my companion in all trips and travels, compact and convenient.

  4. For me personally, Canon is the best camera manufacturer, but a device with such characteristics will surpass many competitors!

  5. I always preferred Canon among cameras. Autofocus at altitude, the image is clear and colorful.

  6. Now I am in the process of choosing a DSLR and the Canon EOS 60D is still among my favorites. In addition to its technical characteristics, I am impressed by the presence of a rotary screen and support for an IR remote trigger.

  7. We decided to buy a good camera. the photo on the phone is not quite satisfying with its quality. When choosing a company, no doubts arose. This is definitely Canon. But the model has not yet been chosen. After reading the specs and reviews, I think we'll focus on the EOS 60D. In terms of characteristics and price-quality ratio, everything suits.

  8. In general, the camera is very solid. Before it was the Canon 1000D. The difference is incomparable!
Taking pictures with this camera is a pleasure.

All that I personally lack in a pair with this camera is only two things:

full frame, working ISO up to 6400, but I do not position this as a lack of the camera, there is a question of price.

I recommend to purchase for those who have already passed the stages of 450-1000D cameras.

  9. I took a second camera for 5d mark2 for video shooting.
didn't expect much from this camera. but starting to work with her, it turned out that it was a very pleasant thing)) I was very surprised that for such money there are so many pleasant things in the cell.
in good light it gives almost the same picture with 5d.
but above 1600 iso it is no longer necessary to shoot. 1600 for noise as 3200 for 5d.
but it’s not worth waiting for more.
crop is even useful when you need a long focus))
when you take a hefty coffin 5d - somehow you get upset right away)) and you can't shoot a lower point without a monitor. but here everything is easy, toy (in a good way) with a completely adult quality.
    in short a joyful camera))
