The first impressions of the Canon EF 20-35 mm f / 3.5-4.5 USM are compactness, lightness and high-quality performance. But the optical characteristics will be discussed below.

Undoubtedly, this lens is perceived as the younger brother of its high-aperture counterpart with the letter "L". Unfortunately, I have no experience with him, but I can compare the result with the picture of a much more common one. Canon EF 17-40mm f / 4.0L... Moreover, given the luminosity, such a comparison may turn out to be even more correct than a comparison with Canon EF 20-35mm f / 2.8L.

Let's get started.
Testing on the camera Canon EOS 6D, all aberration correction software is disabled, the Auto Brightness Correction option is also disabled. A lens hood is being used. Shooting in RAW, conversion via Digital PhotoProfessional 4, default settings.
The very first shots showed that compared to the Canon 17-40L, the tested model has a more pronounced vignetting character. Geometric distortion appeared to be comparable at the same focal lengths (with some advantage in favor of the 17-40L). In terms of sharpness, the lens yielded to the Elke, which is logical. However, it should be noted that subjects shot close at maximum focal length look sharper than distant subjects shot at wide angle. Anyway, in general, the sharpness seemed acceptable.

The nature of blur in the out-of-focus area is very smooth, low-emotional - but this is typical for Canon 17-40L as well. By the way, I note that hips the Canon EF 20-35mm f / 3.5-4.5 USM even seemed a little more "analog", lively, warm than the absolutely dispassionate "digital" Canon EF 17-40 f / 4.0L. In general, for me, the leader in living, three-dimensional drawing remains Tokina AT-X 16-28mm f / 2.8 Pro FX.
A lens from Canon holds back light well (see examples at different focal lengths). As for the hood, it did not come with the tested sample, so I used a Canon 17-40L hood. Those who have worked with it know that it is funny even on their own lens - and what can we say about the Canon 30-35? But, unfortunately, a deeper hood from lens Canon EF-S 17-55 produces 20mm vignetting.
In terms of color rendition, the lens slightly fades into a warm shade - this is the very textbook case when "Canon turns yellow". I also note that for lens the zoom ring is located a bit unusual - but, again, only from the point of view of the owner of the Canon 17-40L.

To sum up.
The lens looks reliable and is pleasant to hold. There is a focusing scale - everything is like in adults. But in terms of optical characteristics, the glass was not particularly impressive. True, the testing was carried out on a cloudy day, which, of course, influenced the result.
I think that the lens can be called a tough seryadnyachkom and no more. I think that Canon engineers were hardly trying to achieve more. In any case, I would prefer to work with either the Canon 17-40L (great focal flexibility), the Canon 20-35L (fast aperture), or the Canon EF-S 17-55 f / 2.8 IS (sharpness, aperture , focal range, image stabilizer)
