Canon EF 70-300 is a zoom lens from Canon. Provides decent image quality for its money. Easy zoom with fast autofocus and powerful stabilization. So powerful that with a certain skill you can easily extract from a series of pictures for 1/4 of a second sharp enough for subsequent printing.

Thanks for the lens provided Slava Terebov.

Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM went on sale in 2005 and was intended to replace the 75-300 IS. By adding a low dispersion element, Canon tried to improve the image quality. I can’t say anything about it in comparison with the old model, as I didn’t have a chance to hold it in my hands. However, I would like to note that the quality of the picture lens will be worth the money spent on it.

The Canon EF 70-300 body is made of textured plastic. The mount has a metal mount, the zoom ring is rubberized ... but the focusing ring is not. It is made of plastic and is part of the body. The Canon EF 70-300 body has switches:

  • Autofocus. Auto-manual, in the "MF" mode, the autofocus motor and the focusing ring are disengaged, while the focusing confirmation works.
  • Stabilizer switches, operating modes and shutdown. The location is unusual at first, then you get used to it.
  • Zoom ring lock. Blocks only at 70mm, so that the "trunk" lens did not leave while carrying.

All information to the surface lens applied with paint, except for the "Image Stabilizer" insert. Design lens prone to dust sucking in, as the sliding part is leaking. It should be noted that thanks to the sliding part, there is a risk of breakage. lens in the event of a collision with the top extended by 10 centimeters.

Canon 70-300 IS USM. In work

The Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 is pretty versatile. Its use allows you to shoot in low light, with shutter speeds up to 1/4 handheld (at ISO1600).

Autofocus is fast, thanks in large part to the USM motor. Focusing speed is fast enough to capture the event. But the tenacity of autofocus with this lens suffers - sometimes painful blockages occur, for example, when shooting bright objects against a contrasting background (I did not specifically).

The Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM focusing ring rotates with the front lens. At 300 mm with the front part extended, it looks somehow scary) The rotation of the focusing ring is within 90 degrees.

The diaphragm control is automatic, as has been the custom since ancient times. The diaphragm is 8-blade, despite the fact that a perfectly even circle is not formed by the petals, in the photographs the light sources are in hips have a rounded shape. Closes at the far end right up to f45.

Sharpness, contrast, color

Sharpness lens falls with increasing focal length, and, in fact, it turns out to be 70-230mm approximately, at 300mm and focusing at infinity, there is no sharpness, as it were. At the same time, clamping the aperture to f8 even saves poorly. Otherwise, no complaints. Apparently, without compromises in this category, after all, with Canon, in any way.

Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM will do well in good light - color distortions in the form of green halos at the edges of contrast transitions are corrected in post-processing without problems. Vignetting and slight distortion are corrected as well.

Canon Stabilizer 70-300 IS USM

Stabilization "generally fire". No - a fire! The stabilizer works at 200% in this lens. Realistically take handheld shots at 300mm and 1/4 second shutter without large lubricants, which is very good for me. In telephoto lenses without a stabilizer, such as the Canon 70-200 f4, this function is lacking. The only pity is that for a stabilizer of 70-200 they ask for another 20 thousand to the price. Well, let's not talk about sad things. It is quite possible that my delight is too exaggerated. After all, in fact, in my hands this is the first Canon telephoto with a stabilizer. One in Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM has two modes of operation - for a static picture and for wiring. The gimbal also does a great job of static in wiring mode, successfully compensating for camera shake in the hands. Through the viewfinder, it looks like a picture freeze. The work of the stabilizer gives out chirping, which is audible to the "naked eye". Here is an example of a picture taken at dusk:

It would be quite possible to see the letters on the sticker completely, but the sensitivity of the camera and the tendency of the lens to blur the image at the maximum focusing distance let down.
