All lenses are assembled according to the "Tessar" scheme, and have a huge number of brothers from other manufacturers around the world. Lanthanum glass in the USSR was brewed only on LZOS, therefore, variants with decoding “Л"In the name Industar-61, as" Lytkarinsky "I think it is strange. That is why Industar-61 - Lanthanum Mirror. Industar-61 L / Z versions come across both single-layer and multi-coating. The difference between them is not very noticeable - the front and rear lenses are themselves made of high quality glass.

Industar-61 was the first domestic consumer photographic lens to use super-heavy crowns (STK-6 brand in two positive lenses). Subsequently, the use of lanthanum and other special glasses in lens indexes was not particularly noted.

Industar-61 rangefinder. Differences from mirror

Despite the difference in one letter of the abbreviated name, identical circuits and glass, the lenses have a different design.

  • The designations L / D (LD) and L / Z (LZ) are usually deciphered as: lanthanum glass, rangefinder or SLR camera. However, the letter "L" (at least for lens Industar-61L) there could be another original meaning - "lytkarinsky".
  • Industar-61 L / D has a rangefinder pusher of the camera viewfinder, the working length is 28,8 mm, M39x1 threaded mount. Itself is almost 2 times lighter than Industar-61 L / Z.
  • Industar-61 L/Z is designed for use in Zenit full-format film cameras. Aperture blades fold relative hole in the shape of a star. Focal length for SLRs (45,5mm), threaded mount М42х1.

Industar-61 L / Z is equipped with an aperture that folds into a star, and after f / 8 - into a hexagon. The lens detects excellent sharpness and color performance in use. The lenses are deeply set in the body of the lens - a kind of hood is formed by the body. Due to the use of super-heavy glass samples, it was possible to bypass the limitations of the "Tessar" scheme and the widest aperture instead of f / 3.5 became f / 2.8.

Industar-61 L / Z

Focusing

The lens focusing ring is wide, occupying most of the body surface. The focus ring rotates gently through 355 degrees for precise focusing. The minimum focusing distance for Industar-61 L / Z is 33 centimeters. The range of focusing distances of Industar-61 L / Z is suitable for portrait, macro photography, and for a camera on street with a clamp up to hyperfocal distance.

When focusing, the front part extends by about 2 centimeters, over time "sucking" dust into the inter-lens space. Infinity for Industar-61 L / Z MS 2.8 / 50 comes after six meters on the scale. The depth of field, as we know, depends on the set aperture. The aperture, clamped down to f / 16, sharpens everything from two meters. A small depth of field at an open aperture and a large circle of rotation of the focusing ring reduces the efficiency of changing focus. For this reason, the lens is not very suitable for dynamic shooting with a game of depth of field.

Industar-61 L / Z

Diaphragm

Iris, 5-petal, petals of a special shape, blackened, folded into a star shape. The aperture ring is thin and smooth. The movement of the diaphragm ring is smooth. There is a preset. The star-shaped aperture hole inherent in Industar-61 L / Z makes this lens interesting to use - at medium aperture values, stars of glare of light sources appear in the blur zone, instead of the "nuts" familiar to other lenses. Thus, the small number of aperture blades is compensated by the unusual shape of the relative aperture. Wave-9 produced by the same LZOS, and Japanese Rikoh Rikenon 28mm f2.8.

Industar-61 L / Z

There is no aperture automatic in the lens, therefore, even on advanced cameras of that time, it was necessary to set the aperture with the knobs in all shooting modes. Due to the small size and smoothness of the diaphragm ring, it is inconvenient to select a value with gloves. Wave-9, made in the same technical solution of the body, due to its large size allows you to better feel the lens controls.

Preset ring

The iris control ring is combined with the preset mechanism. The mechanism is triggered when you pull the diaphragm ring towards you. On many Industar-61 L / Z, noise is encountered when rotating the ring in the preset mode. One gets the impression that something inside is clinging to him. Often, users are unaware of the existence of this ring. Presetting the aperture by locking is necessary in order to correctly focus on old cameras, where it was impossible to focus on the working value, since the viewfinders were too dark.

Industar-61 L / Z

Depth of field control

Due to the shallow depth of field, focusing on cameras with a small viewfinder size can cause hitting problems. You have to use LiveView much more often than with autofocus lenses. As an alternative to LiveView, you can use the distance scale and depth of field of the lens itself, or adapter rings with a focus confirmation chip (more expensive). In the end, if you clamp the aperture down to f / 8 - f / 16, then you can focus approximately.

Aberration

The lens has corrected or minimized aberrations such as astigmatism, spherical and spherochromatic aberrations. And even at an open aperture (f / 2.8) Industar 61 LZ they are minimized. Excellent optical characteristics of "Industar-61" are obtained due to the use in both positive lenses of the superheavy lanthanum crown STK6 (Crown is called glass with a low refractive index and high dispersion (the difference between refractive indices for rays of different colors).

Industar-61 L / Z

Vignetting

When you install lens on a full-frame camera, at f / 2.8 with Industar-61 L / Z, vignetting can be observed in the corners. Vignetting disappears at f / 5.6 and appears at f / 4 depending on shooting conditions. On crop 1.6 (Canon APS-C), Industar-61 L / Z vignetting is not noticeable.

Sharpness, contrast, color

Sharpness lens excellent. I was convinced of this myself, using it for macro photography, and in the process of collecting images for this article. On open, there is an insignificant drop in sharpness towards the edge of the image, which is eliminated by tilting the aperture ring towards f / 3.2. Color rendition and detailing are pleasing to the eye exactly as long as strong backlight does not hit the lens. The lens does not like bright backgrounds, shooting in backlight is contraindicated. Even multi-enlightenment does not help.

Housing and build quality of Industar-61 L / Z

The build quality of the lens is floating. I have not yet met the Industar-61 L / Z without backlash, or a jammed aperture ring in the preset mode. Overall, the lens does not look or feel loose, flimsy. Some examples required grease change, disassembly and maintenance. In disassembly, Industar 61 L / Z is quite simple, does not require special skills other than care.

The inscriptions on the frame are engraved and painted. Colors differ from lens to lens. I came across both yellow and white lettering, and multi-colored. The depth of field scale is stamped on the body. The front lens is recessed deep into the body to form a hood.

Advantages of Industar-61 L / Z

  • Serviceable Industar-61 L / Z creates a picture at a level that places modern plastic competitors in the lower price segment.
  • Lack of autofocus should not be embarrassing, because, for example, in portrait and macro photography it can be omitted.
  • DOF calculator and distance scale is absent in most modern lenses. Industar-61 L / Z can be set according to the marks on the lens itself and removed from the belt.
  • Availability Industar-61 L / Z gives a tangible advantage when choosing lens a novice amateur photographer.
  • Simple and damage-resistant design. The lens is not afraid of frost, temperature and humidity changes, drops. The metal case will not crack from impact, and the absence of delicate electronics allows you not to worry about its safety. Industar-61 LZ is easy to disassemble and maintain.
  • Can be used with any digital cameras, through the appropriate adapter. About adapters below.
  • A good choice a novice portraitist or makrushnik. High sharpness, rather thin depth of field in the open, despite the incomplete blurring of the background, allows you to use the lens in portrait photography. Star-shaped lens flares in hips add artistry to the frame.

Use on modern cameras

On a camera with APS-C sensor (kf = 1.6) the camera will have a field of view equal to the equivalent 80mm focal length, and the aperture will correspond to the value f / 4,5... Why is that? Because, firstly, because of the narrow viewing angle, you will have to move further. Secondly, the camera's sensor receives 1,6 times less light than a full-frame 35mm sensor. Thirdly, although this does not apply to the previous two statements, the lens on the crop has a drop in sharpness due to the denser arrangement of pixels on the matrix and their concentration in the center of the lens.

On a full frame, the lens works as intended - it has a more flexible picture and characteristics corresponding to the declared ones.

The easiest way to shoot is in the mode Aperture Priority (Av)when the camera adjusts the required shutter speed based on the current aperture value and the light in the frame.

Industar-61 L / Z on Canon

Installed through the M42 - Canon EF adapter, you can read about the adapters here... Adapters without chips, from Helios 44m-6 to Canon EF are cheap. In general, you just need to buy an adapter with or without focus confirmation, and the lens is ready for use.

Industar-61 L / Z on Nikon

It is problematic to install without adjusting the gaps for the Nikon system, however, without it, although it disappears focusing infinity, the available range will allow you to take a bust portrait. To preserve infinity, the optical scheme must be "moved" to the camera matrix by about 3,5 mm. It is possible to buy an adapter with a corrective lens, but the picture quality will be deteriorated.

Industar-61 L / Z on Fujifilm, Canon EOS R

On any mirrorless camera, Industar-61 L / Z, like other M39 / M42 lenses, will work in full force through the appropriate adapter. Don't forget about the crop factor and the equivalent focal length.

Industar-61 L / 3. Focal length alternatives

The main probable application of Industar 61 L / Z is bust portraits, street, macro photography. For video shooting, the lens is suitable if you are satisfied with the accuracy of rotation of the focusing ring.

The lenses below are a legacy of yesteryear that is still in use today.

Helios 44 series

Helios of any modification will have better artistic characteristics due to the working wide aperture of f / 2, and the older Helios models are slightly more resistant to backlight.

Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50mm f / 2.8 T m42

Summary

The bokeh lens can be used in artistic photography if you correctly compose the frame and choose the lighting. Of course, compared to modern lenses, the lens cannot boast of any improved image quality or usability. However, this is offset by its reliability, simplicity and price. In the secondary market, modifications of Industar-61 L / Z with both single-layer and multi-coating can be found at an average price of one to one and a half thousand rubles, which is not so expensive for a completely good lens.

Industar-61 L/Z - by Artur Mikhanev

Industar-61 L / Z - a rather interesting and rare Soviet fifty kopeck piece

Industar 61 LZ
Much more common is its brother - a lens from rangefinder cameras. Industar-61L / D. Butas you know, you don't use it especially on DSLRs. And here Industar-61L / Z was specially designed for SLR cameras - as indicated by its designation.

Industar-61L / Z has several main features.
  • The first is sharpness... Indeed, whichever specimen falls into your hands, it is likely to be distinguished by quite good sharpness. The explanation for this is the optical design (Tessar) and, in principle, the higher quality performance that distinguishes this lens.
  • The second feature is minimum focusing distance... It is only 30 centimeters long, which makes it possible to get very interesting shots at close range. With the M42 adapter rings, you can generally shoot close-ups. With a reversing ring (that is, by flipping the lens) you can achieve a magnification ratio of 1: 1.
  • The third feature is interesting glare in the out-of-focus area, which is a kind of asterisks.
  • The fourth feature is a very deeply recessed front lens. In fact, this lens can get by no hood.
  • The fifth feature is quite good blackening aperture blades (which, in fact, is a rarity for the Soviet photo industry).

Contrast at lens normal, color reproduction is correct, chromatic aberration is negligible. The drawing in the blur zone is quite soft, plastic, watercolor. Sometimes you can even observe something like doubling lines. Generally, Industar-61L / Z can be recommended to already advanced amateur photographers who know a lot about manual lenses and want to get optics with an interesting pattern and good sharpness / contrast / color rendition

For the manufacture of Industar-61 L / Z MS super-heavy glass crowns, STK-6 (the name "lanthanum" is found). In many ways, the optical properties of this glass depend on this. The first thing I want to note is more saturated, dense colors. Needless to say - the color rendition of Industar-61 L / Z MS is at a very high level. But I’ll say right away that the lens loves sunlight - then it will show everything that it is capable of. In cloudy weather, miracles should not be expected from him. Next is the contrast. Also no complaints. The front element of the objective is very deep into the frame. Together with the hood, this makes the lens completely immune to side illumination. The picture is obtained as a result of three-dimensional, spatial, visually perceptible Sharpness - no comment. The resolution in the center is 42 lines per mm, along the edge - 30. Even a novice manual optics enthusiast knows that this lens is famous for its sharpness (starting from f / 4.0 it is even throughout the field). I note that when the aperture is closed, the glare in the blur zone turns into characteristic "stars". I met pictures where this feature was played up very, very artistically.
The minimum focusing distance is less than 30 cm. This allows the lens to be used in macro photography (when using M42 macro rings). This is facilitated by the large, smooth focusing ring.
Generally, Industar-61 L / Z - this is a very interesting glass, especially the multi-coated version
